The history of the area begins more than 20,000 years ago when the area was settled by the Aborigines. Europeans arrived and founded a settlement in the late 1700s and the town officially became a city in 1959. It is now one of Australia's fastest growing cities. The city became a popular holiday destination for soldiers returning from World War II and by the 1960s, the first high-rise apartment blocks and hotels began to appear. The opening of the **Gold Coast** airport in 1981 and the construction of various theme parks throughout the area, cemented the city's position as a major tourist resort. Building literally peaked in 2005 with the opening of the world's tallest residential building at Surfer's Paradise.

Today, the city is perhaps Australia's foremost resort destination and one of the world's great tourist destinations. With 300 days of sunshine annually, more than 30 beaches and fabulous waves, the area is a beacon for surfers and for fans of all sorts of water sports. At night, the action moves to the bars and clubs, with some of the best nightlife in the country. It is also an area of great natural beauty and lovers of the outdoors will find breathtaking scenery
