Cheap Flights To Changsha

There has been a city on this spot for over 3,000 years, making Changsha and its surroundings one of the oldest inhabited settlements in China. Always a centre for both the rice trade and intellectual pursuits, the medieval heart of Changsha was still in existence right up until the beginning of the 20th century, but the Sino-Japanese War meant much of its earlier history was destroyed. Today, this city is modern and forward looking with a youthful buzz created by its universities while many of its attractions are related in some way to Mao Zedong, who studied in the city. Reminders of ancient Changsha can be seen in Tianxin Park, while Chairman Mao's presence is celebrated on Orange Isle.

Things To Do

The magnolia trees that line the wide streets of Changsha make exploring a pleasure, and when hunger strikes the unique spicy flavour of traditional street food is never far away. The mountain ranges that overlook the city provide a pleasant retreat when it's time to escape the city bustle.

  • A glimpse of history

In Tianxin Park you can visit what's left of the earth and stone walls that were originally built in 202 B.C. and reinforced during the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century. The attractive Tianxin Pavilion still sits on top of the wall.

  • The Chairman's Poetry

Orange Isle is a long, narrow island lying in the middle of the Xiang River. The young Mao immortalised it in the most well-known of his poems aptly named Changsha. A huge bust of the youthful Mao with long flowing hair stands on the island.

  • Taking tea on the mountain.

Taking the cable car up Yuelu Mountain provides a pleasant retreat from the urban bustle. Stroll back down enjoying the views and stopping for tea in one of the traditional tea houses or pavilions that line the route. At the foot of the mountain, you can take a tour of the Yuelu Academy.

Boats rowing to the hypnotic beat of drums, statues of Buddha being washed, dances to celebrate the clam harvests and plenty of cultural opportunities all make up the festival and events diary of Changsha.

In Changsha, a famous Dragon Boat Contest is held on the Xiang River. Watched by a huge audience, the crews of elaborate boats row to the beat of drums as they race to cross the finishing line.
