Caracas was inhabited by indigenous peoples at the time of its founding in 1567 by Diego de Losada and was named Santiago de León de Caracas. By 1777, the city had become the Captaincy General of Venezuela and had expanded greatly due to its production and cultivation of cocoa. This region is also renowned for its colourful and flamboyant festivals. Visit in July when a host of festivals are celebrated including the Naval Battle of Lake Maracaibo. The event celebrates Venezuela's independence from Spain and festivities include parades, firework displays and competitions.

Playa Caracas, or Red Beach as it is known, is a firm favourite with the natives. Featured on Victoria's Secret Swim Special, this glorious beach boasts powder white sands, turquoise waters and is flanked by the most glorious scenery in the region.

Visit the Centro Artesanal Los Goajiros, a treasure trove of Orinoco crafts. Browse the selection of musical instruments, Rasta caps and woven hammocks. This underground corridor of market stalls offers a distinctly bohemian vibe.

Caracas is hailed for its flamboyant and colourful festivals. Although many of the events are religious in nature, there is also a myriad of musical and cultural delights to experience.
- Carnival
In a similar vein to Mardi Gras, Carnival occurs in February and is a celebration of the start of Lent. The event spans four days and onlookers are entertained by parades, firework displays, music and dance.
- Naval Battle of Lake Maracaibo Festival
Occurring in July, The Naval Battle of Lake Maracaibo celebrates the country's independence from Spain. Festival goers are treated to street parades with participants wearing full regalia and this family friendly festival also features competitions and live music performances.
- El Hatillo Music Festival
Hosted in October, the El Hatillo Music Festival offers Jazz, Rock and Folk music to entertain festival goers and the event spans two weeks.
