Travelling Trends for 2020 That No One Is Talking About
2020 is almost upon us! With a new year comes new opportunities to live, learn, and most importantly travel. We’ve seen many shifts in global travel patterns this year. Used right, this information can help you make better flight decisions in 2020, saving you valuable cash that you can spend on things that matter.
Sit tight - this decade is set to conclude on a high, and you’ll be in the hot seat to make the most of it!
New Airports, New Destinations
Airports have become more than just a hub to the rest of the world - Jewel Changi Airport and Istanbul Airport are prime examples of airports that are attractions in their own right. With a new airport comes greater capacity, and consequently more flights planned - good news for travellers looking to expand their horizons or snap up a bargain amidst the added supply.
So what airports are opening come 2020? First up is Salt Lake City International Airport, Utah’s main aviation hub. Built with the passenger experience in mind, the airport will have six international gates for a growing volume of visitors, which hit a record high of 25.5 million passengers in 2018.
Also nearing completion is Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport, a project that has been brewing since 2012 but is finally scheduled for service come next year. When complete, the airport will reflect Germany’s commitment to sustainable aviation, all while serving an upside of 34.7 million passengers that pass through the capital each year.
The Tokyo 2020 Effect
The greatest showcase of sporting excellence will take place in Tokyo next year. The Summer Olympics looks to improve on its previous showing in Rio, which attracted 6.6 million tourists to the South American city in 2016. Tokyo has already made headlines for moulding the Games medals using only recycled metals, but the event has also opened new doors that could mean better deals for travellers.
Japan is set to add 50 more international flights per day in Haneda International Airport in preparation for this event. The nearby Narita airport is readying itself for more passengers as well after a cap on landing slots from Narita to China was lifted. This translates to more flights to and from Japan even after the Games have ended, opening up more ways to get to the Land of the Rising Sun. Will Tokyo become the next hotspot for tourism in 2020? If early signs ring true, your trip to Japan might be much easier on the wallet come the Tokyo Olympics!
Change Currency - Or Go Cashless! (include Emergency Money)
Booking your perfect holiday used to be pretty straightforward - a trip to the money changer with a wad of cash. However, the value you got from your hard-earned money depended largely on the whims of your bank or money changer of choice.
Enter the world of mobile banking, where your currency is truly yours. Mobile-based banking services like TransferWise, have sprung up and given traditional currency exchange options a run for their money. With their debit cards, you can make cashless purchases around the world without an unwieldy stack of cash on hand - a big up on safety and value!
It is no question that climate change is an issue that must be addressed for our continued survival, and airlines and travellers alike have shifted their preferences to meet this need. Travellers are opting for longer trips to more places with renewable sources of transport between cities. This doesn’t have to mean greater costs - arriving in one city and departing in another can sometimes bring up a cheaper fare!
CheapTickets.sg allows you to easily search for multi-city flights while uncovering potential carrier discounts. Just select ‘Multiple Destinations’ when hunting for your flights, key in your destinations, and you’re good to go.
Remember when flying out of a country was an exclusively family affair? We don’t either. In fact, travel trends in 2019 show a proliferation in solo travel - Dublin Airport claimed that 57% of its 31.5 million passengers last year were flying by themselves.
As the travel industry hustles to meet this demand, expect flight discounts that are no longer shackled to quantities, and collaborations with hostel-based lodging options. All these could mean more savings for you, if you know where to look - if you’ve plenty of wanderlust but you’re feeling lost, our promotions page is a great place to start!
