Cheap Flights to Galapagos Islands

Dispersed around the Equator and a group of volcanic islands, the Galapagos Islands is a haven for wildlife and a strictly controlled conservation area. The region attracts wildlife and water sports enthusiasts, and a visit to the islands is hailed as a once in a lifetime experience. The first official records of the islands' existence date back to 1535 when the Bishop of Panama, Fray Tomás de Berlanga, stumbled across the area by chance. The islands were first named in 1684 by Ambrose Cowley after his pirate friends, British nobles and Royalty.

Today, although the Galapagos Islands remains a conservation zone, this area of outstanding natural beauty has developed to cater for visitors of all interests. Each island has retained its individual character and charm and is distinctly different from the others. The islands also host a selection of festivals and events throughout the year, entertaining both the local communities and visitors alike. The Fruit and Flower Festival, for example, occurs in February and celebrates the islands' flora, fauna and the abundance of Spring. Festival goers are treated to live entertainment, cultural and artistic events.

There is no shortage of interesting and fun attractions in the Galapagos Islands. From spotting tortoises to shopping in the brightly coloured markets, dining in fine restaurants to exploring the plethora of natural attractions. The islands cater for everyone.

Located on Charles Darwin Avenue, La Garrapata boasts a fine seafood menu. Dine al fresco and appreciate the scenic surroundings while sampling the island's local catch of lobster, mussels and prawns.

  • For the nature lovers

Visit the highlands of Santa Cruz and spot the giant Galapagos Tortoise as they roam around the farmlands. The vermilion flycatcher nests in the Scalesia trees of the dense forest, which is also the natural habitat of a range of avian life.

  • For the shopaholics

Visit the craft markets at Avenida Charles Darwin and Tomás de Berlanga. Local artisans offer a selection of pre-Columbian style jewellery. Additionally, shoppers will find a range of hand crafted souvenirs, carpets and pottery.

Calendar of Events

These beautiful islands host an array of festivals and events throughout the year. From celebrating the islands' flora to rejoicing when the turtles lay their eggs -- the Galapagos Islands are in permanent fiesta spirit.

  • The Fruit and Flower Festival. The Fruit and Flower Festival is held in February and is a celebration of the islands' natural bounty. Those who attend are treated to a host of spectacular cultural and artistic events in addition to live music and performances.

  • The Día de los Difuntos. This event takes place on the 2nd of November each year, when it is believed that dead relatives visit their loved ones. In the towns and cities, large groups gather and share home made pastries and cakes. In the more rural communities, families eat from the graves of their deceased.

  • Foundation of Guayaquil. The Foundation of Guayaquil occurs on 24th July each year. It is a celebration of the founding of Guayaquil and features traditional dances and parades. Art exhibitions are also hosted in Las Peñas.
