Cheap Flights To Rabat

Rabat is Morocco's capital on the shores of the Atlantic. It's a relaxed city and full of charm with clean boulevards lined with palm trees. Benefitting from a pristine central beach, the city also has an enchanting 12th-century Kasbah and a pretty walled Medina. Visitors will enjoy the fact that the city is somewhat less touristy than other Moroccan cities. So, all in all, it's a great place to go for a short break.

The city is located across the river Bou Regreg from (and within walking distance of) the city lies Salé: Rabat's sister city. However, there's enough in Rabat itself to keep visitors entertained. From the Cellah, which is the ruins of a former Roman city, to Hassan Tower, a 144ft-high historic vantage point, this metropolis is totally enchanting and also features upscale restaurants and sociable cafés. Early summer is a great visiting time. Music-lovers will adore the annual Mawazine festival at the end of May and there's also a delightful wax candle festival in Salé at the end of March/beginning of April. Finally, Ramadan is an interesting experience for visitors to witness and take part in, especially as it draws to a close with much celebration.

Things To Do

Rich in history and sights, visitors can immerse themselves in the ancient parts of Rabat and learn about the fascinating culture of Morocco.

  • Visit the Kasbah and Medina
After entering into Kasbah through an elaborate stone gate, meander through the fascinating alleyways full of flowers and bright blue houses. Then, it's a short walk the medina surrounded by ancient walls with an array of colourful street merchandise to discover.

  • Visit the Cellah
The Cellah is actually the ruins of an old Roman city. Located on the edge of town, it's nestled within fabulous bamboo tropical gardens with banana and fig trees and a stone-walled pool with storks and eels.

  • Ascend the majestic Hassan Tower.
This unmissable tower is 144 feet high and has been part of the city for eight centuries. The tower was never completely finished after its founder died in 1199, but it has a really splendid view over the river.

Calendar Of Events

As the capital of vibrant Morocco, Rabat has several major celebrations every year that visitors will relish including music, the celebrations around Ramadan and a quirky, unique wax candle procession.

  • Mawazine. This festival is dubbed "Rhythms of the World" and is a must for music lovers. Featuring African artists as well as international stars like Christina Aguilera, it takes place in the city at the end of May.

  • Ramadan celebrations. After strict fasting during Ramadan, the end of this period is marked by the festival of Eid, where all kinds of flamboyant celebrations take place in the city.

  • The Wax Candle Festival. Every April in Salé, there's a procession of wax candles, large lanterns and other light-themed creations with dancers and musicians in tow creating an amazing spectacle that everyone loves.
