Cheap Flights To Kozhikode
A vibrant city, nestled on the sunny Malabar Coast in southern India, Kozhikode has much to offer holidaymakers. Its coastal location makes it the perfect choice for long, relaxing breaks, while outdoors spaces like Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary enhance its appeal for nature fans.
The city, also known as Calicut, is the largest metropolitan area in northern Kerala, a state that's been popular with beach-loving tourists for decades. Once dubbed 'City of Spices', Kozhikode was an important trading port. It was the capital of the Zamorin dynasty and was visited by Arab traders as early as the 7th century. Vasco da Gama landed here in 1498, opening up trade with Europe and bringing Portuguese customs and traditions to southern India.
Over the years, English, French and Dutch traders arrived in Kozhikode and their influence can still be seen in parts of the city today. Highlights for visitors who enjoy outdoor activities include boating on the Kallai River or exploring Mananchira Maidan, the original courtyard of the Zamorin King, Mana Vikrama and now a spacious park with a pond and musical fountains. Anyone with a sweet tooth will love shopping in Mittai Theruvu; the city's famous 'Sweet Meat Street', is lined with stores selling sweets and halva.
Things To Do
The city's long and exciting history is brought to life through monuments like the Church of South India which was built in 1824 by Swiss missionaries. Visitors can learn even more about the Kozhikode at museums like Pazhassiraja Museum with its antique bronzes and coins or Kirtads, a unique museum that delves into the district's tribal cultures.
Children and adults alike will love exploring Kappad Beach or walking out into the Arabian Sea on the Beypore Palimutt sea bridge. Take the family boating on the Kallai River, see the old Thikkoti Lighthouse or go swimming and trekking in the forests at Kozhippara Water Falls in nearby Kakkadampoyil. Energetic kids of all ages will also love trying the thrilling rides at the Lion's Park theme park close to the Beach Aquarium.
Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is spread over a group of islands at the meeting point of the Kadalunipuzha River and the Arabian Sea. It's one of the state's major attractions and over 100 species of native bird visit each year along with around 60 migratory species. Birdwatchers can expect to see herons, gulls, sandpipers, terns, herons and cormorants at any time and, if they're lucky, they might even spot brahminy kites or whimbrels
